What is a word mark?

A wordmark is a trademark that protects a word, name, phrase, or combination of letters and numbers in all visual representations.

A wordmark protects the text itself, not its appearance. Owners may use any font, color, or size, as protection applies regardless of presentation. However, this protection is limited to the word, so if a competitor copies only the visual design of their logo without using the exact wording, a wordmark alone may not be enough to enforce rights.

Wordmarks are the most common trademarks for brand names, product names, slogans, and taglines.
