Classes of goods and services are the categories used to organize trademark applications under the Nice Classification system. When filing a trademark, the applicant must specify which classes their goods or services fall into; the trademark protection granted applies only within those registered classes.

The system divides all commercial activity into 45 classes: Classes 1–34 cover goods, Classes 35–45 cover services. Each class groups together broadly similar types of products or services. Class 25, for example, covers clothing and footwear. Class 41 covers education and entertainment services.

The class structure allows two similar-sounding brands to coexist without conflict if they operate in sufficiently different classes and the goods or services are unrelated enough that consumers would not be confused about their source.
