Is a word mark just the text or also the font?

A wordmark is just textual; it protects the specific words, letters, or numbers, not the typeface they appear in. The protection extends to the text in any font or visual presentation, which is both the strength and the limitation of a wordmark. It provides broad coverage for the name itself, but it offers no protection for the specific visual style.

In other words, a wordmark protects you from anyone misusing your name in any visual representations. However, if someone used your brand's visual elements while avoiding the brand name entirely, it would be more difficult to stop them.
