I have received an office action from the USPTO. What should I do?

Read the office action in full. The examining attorney's notice identifies the specific grounds for the objection and what actions are available to resolve it. The response deadline is included in the notice; currently three months from the date of the office action, extendable to six months for a fee.

For formality issues (missing information, specimen deficiencies, description corrections), responses can often be filed without legal assistance. For substantive refusals (likelihood of confusion, descriptiveness), a well-argued legal response gives significantly better odds of success than a self-filed one.
