How can I prolong the validity of my trademark?

A trademark is prolonged by filing a renewal application with the relevant IP office before the 10-year registration expires. Most jurisdictions allow renewal to be filed from six months before the expiry date. Some (the US, Australia, and New Zealand) allow it up to 12 months in advance.

If the deadline is missed, most jurisdictions provide a six-month grace period during which a late renewal can still be filed, typically with an additional surcharge. After the grace period closes, the trademark lapses and cannot be renewed; a new application would be required.

Renewal does not require re-examination of the mark. The goods and services list can be narrowed at renewal but not expanded.

Trama handles trademark renewals; get a renewal reminder before your deadline.
