Is it better to try to register the word mark or the logo?

Most businesses prioritize registering a wordmark because it protects the name in any visual representation and provides the broadest coverage for the most commonly copied brand element.

However, a logo registration is more appropriate if the visual identity of the brand is the primary asset. A logo also helps when the brand name alone is considered descriptive or confusingly similar to a previous registration, since a logo’s distinctive visual elements help overcome the similarity claims.

If possible, registering both provides the most complete protection. If you need to choose one, consider which element would cause the most damage if a competitor were to use it freely.
