Should I get a trademark when my business expands to a new country?

Yes. Trademark rights are territorial; a registration in your home country provides no protection in the new market. Expanding commercially without a local trademark registration means building brand recognition in a market where a third party can file for the same or a similar mark and legitimately demand you stop using it.

File a trademark application in the new country at the same time as or before launching there. Filing before launch establishes priority and prevents a competitor from registering first. Conducting a preliminary search in the new market before filing helps identify any existing marks that could cause issues.
